2006 Gewürztraminer - Susan
The 2006 continues our tradition of musk-scented and unctuously built Gewürztraminers and clearly shows the generosity of the season. The nose is delicate yet expressive, displaying marzipan and fine tea-leaf characters combined with whole-baked spiced apple. Fresh Turkish delight and something between caramel and condensed milk draw the lips irresistibly toward the wine. The palate is typically rounded and viscous with a generous level of retained sweetness. Freshly cut stone fruit under a tropical sun grip the taste buds, while the acid is characteristically soft and gullible. Balance is provided by a prickly spine of phenolics which ensures the wine keeps its feet firmly on the ground, despite its head being high in the clouds. Hints of Botrytis add an apricot note, while the weighty alcohol gives a slight sting to the finish.
With 6 years experience, we have gradually been teasing out the cellaring prediction of this variety and we think this wine will still be drinking nicely in 2011. Do try it.
