2006 Sauvignon Blanc - Sarah
Gooseberry and firm nectarine dominate the precociously perfumed nose but leave room for strains of the thickly scented flowers on a wild passionfruit vine at twilight in some isolated West Coast valley. Hints of currant leaf and maybe lemon grass project an intensity and purity which is simultaneously impressive and scary. In the mouth, the wine is keenly poised with crisp up-front acidity leading a merry dance as it twirls its way across the palate. The fruit is again gooseberry, plump and crunchy skinned, and there are restrained notes of watermelon skin. A subtle streak of residual sweetness imbues balance and results in a wine which is finely tuned and well adjusted.
The finish is lively and as clean as a whistle, manipulating and subduing the taste buds as it passes, then like Hendrix's Foxy Lady it leaves the senses reeling. As usual we recommend enjoying this wine in the year of production but a recently enjoyed bottle of the 2004 showed they can mature gracefully.
Back Label Information
This off-dry wine is a beautiful example of the variety. The piercing purity of gooseberry fruit and fresh acidity combine with riper tropical notes to give a full flavoured and zesty wine. Enjoy within 1 to 2 years for freshness, or cellar for added complexity.
