The Haythornthwaite Vineyard is located on the outskirts of the small village of Martinborough in the South East corner of the North Island of New Zealand. Considered to be the driest area in the North Island, Martinborough is an hour-and-a-quarter's drive from Wellington over the Rimutaka mountain range, shown in the background of the picture above. A comprehensive train service runs from Wellington to Featherston and a bus from Martinborough meets every train, seven days a week. To many Martinborough folk, Wellington is simply a suburb of Martinborough! The vineyard is a family owned boutique vineyard of 11 acres, focusing on quality rather than quantity. Located on the ancient alluvial Martinborough river terraces made up of deep, free-draining gravel overlaid with a gravely silt loam. Also located on the site is self-contained accommodation available all year round for short and long stays. A cellar door operates all year round on weekends and long weekends, and over the Chrstmas break. Wines can be purchased at the cellar door, through select outlets, or at any time, via e-mail. We routinely courier wine all over New Zealand and the world.
